    Expel

    Expel

    Expel

First, expel stale air by breathing in through the nose and purposefully out through the mouth 3 times.

    Why expel?

This is to clear stagnant breath and Qi and carbon dioxide that accumulates during shallow breathing and stressful periods.

    Descend

    Descend

    Descend

Then, eyes closed, breathe in for 5 counts through the nose and out for 5 counts through the mouth. Imagine inhaling oxygen really deeply, filling your stomach and your chest cavity. Calm your mind by letting your mental energy descend, relaxing your muscles.

    Why descend?

Don’t panic about how you are breathing – it’s about taking the focus down from your mind and inwards. When we descend our mental energy, the heart rate, slows, blood pressure drops and your muscles begin to relax. Exhaling deeply leaves a larger vacuum ready to be filled with fresh oxygen.

    Smile

    Smile

    Smile

As you exhale, imagine something that really makes you smile. Use your whole diaphragm and completely move the breath through the body.

    Smiling?

Positive emotion = positive health. PNI response. When we are stressed, the first thing to go is your digestive system. Focusing positive energy on that area is hugely beneficial. Plus, it helps focus your mind – its tricky to imagine a smile and be thinking about something else at the same time!

About the rescue breath ritual

It only takes around a minute – but the benefits are huge! Focusing inwards calms your mind. And using your lungs to full capacity will slow your heart rate and oxygenate the blood properly.
