The damaging effects of stress
Stress is widely accepted to either cause, or be a contributing factor in the majority of contemporary illness. In 2015/16 stress accounted for 45% of all working days lost due to ill health in the UK. Stress instantly disturbs basic functions like heart rate, sleep, breathing and digestion. It can make us sweat, cause muscles to tense up, cause common day to day ailments such as low-immunity, bad sleep, inability to lose weight, premature ageing, skin disorders, aches and pains. It impacts our overall wellbeing, impacting productivity and creating relationship issues. Over time it can lead to a myriad of serious problems including almost every known chronic disease, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, dementia, depression, allergies, asthma, arthritis and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Yet despite these alarming statistics, we're not doing anything methodical about it - apart from an occasional yoga blitz or the more regular glass of wine.
